Saint Luke’s Medical Center Philippine Islands Hospital Is a Jewel of the Pacific
Quezon City, Philippines
The Challenge
To become an internationally recognized academic medical school, St. Luke’s is designed as a state-of-the art Academic Medical Center with mixed-use buildings surrounding it that can offer world-class health care at any time.
The Design Solution
Designed for both the public and the hospital, Saint Luke’s Medical Center is organized around a green central park as the fundamental element. First, it reinforces the connective tissue to the community, welcoming the neighborhood into the campus providing a much-needed green space to the environment. This allows the opportunity to foster dialogue and collaboration. Second to the green plan are the innovation plazas programmed between different building typologies to also foster dialogue and collaboration.
The three major essential elements of an Academic Medical Center – Hospital, Research and Classrooms are brought together in harmony, interconnected by the green central park. Accidental meeting places for medical staff and researchers were carefully created to foster translational, bench-to-bed research.
With the formal agreement between St. Luke’s and the Mayo Clinic moving forward, spaces for shared resources will also be provided for future collaborations.
The Design Impact
The greenfield hospital features 600 inpatient beds and a full complement of clinical inpatient and outpatient services. The facility is also planned to house research laboratories and classrooms, further complementing the facility’s academic mission.
The hospital was the first in the Philippines – and the second in all Asia — to be accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI), the international arm of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
